How To Practice Self-Love and Acceptance

The self-care industry has quite a high value—around $450 billion. Although self-care practices exist and contribute to cultivating self-love and appreciation, they may not be sufficient—not if you struggle to love and accept yourself as you truly are. Massages, bath bombs, and mental health care days are not concrete methods to build and practice self-acceptance and love.

It’s easy to say you love yourself when you’re not crippled by trauma. Thus, self-acceptance becomes essential to keep yourself stable, as it is the foundation of loving yourself and the things that make you. It means loving yourself wholly and accepting yourself even for things you cannot change and control. 

Embrace Your Uniqueness 

The core of self-acceptance is to ensure you fully accept yourself. Thus, there will be things that make you special. There will also be bad things about you – and you need to acknowledge them first, then accept them. 

  • Your flaws: This part is the more challenging part, especially when some of our flaws may cause us a lot of grief and even damage our relationships. Are these flaws uniquely on-brand for you as a person? Can they work as a possible advantage? 
  • Your strengths: Are there particular strengths you have that can make a difference for others? Can you use this strength for good and to make you happy? This subject can also be touchy for others, especially those who struggle with self-esteem.
  • Your current circumstances: Do you accept your life as it is? Or do you often fantasize about being in different situations, like wanting to be born into generational wealth? 

You also need to ask yourself: How can these differences benefit you in the future? How do they add value to your life? Can you use these tools for good? 

Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude keeps us grounded because it allows us to examine the trajectory of our lives from a more positive lens and find things from which we can derive joy. It can seem challenging if you are a negative person, but it’s an excellent way to train the brain to see more of the positive things, the silver linings that help make days pass a little better and more accessible. 

It’s an opportunity to learn lessons if you’ve failed at something. You can even be grateful for more significant or small things. 

Reframe The Way You See Things

In terms of gamers and millennials, negative and limiting beliefs is a vast skill issue that nerfs you from full self-acceptance. These negative statements and beliefs mirror your inner critic and can cause a lot of suffering. Allow yourself to keep listening to these negative statements and beliefs. You will not be able to reach your potential fully – and most of all, you will not reach unconditional self-acceptance – which is the key and foundation to being able to bounce back and love yourself. 

To overcome this, one method you can try is to reframe your beliefs by writing them down and challenging every statement on paper. Ask yourself if it is true, and state that you are a good person, but you make mistakes because you are human, and you have to take accountability for the mistakes that you’ve made.

Forgive Yourself

Lastly, if you’ve made any mistakes that have led to pain, you need to forgive and let go. It will help you feel free and better from all the excess baggage you have carried. 

Remember the situations, actions, and mistakes you have made. It’s easy to think, “I’m stupid and worthless; I’m stupid,” but you have to affirm that you must forgive yourself for believing that and debunk it. 

Celebrate Your Accomplishments

If we’ve allotted time to dwell on the bad and problematic things we’ve done, then we should also take the time to celebrate you and what you’ve accomplished. We’ve only had a few occasions to celebrate you and your accomplishments.

Some of these include the following:

  • Surviving during the pandemic
  • Overcoming your weakness is a subject
  • Passing a class
  • Getting a certification
  • Overcoming abuse/structural barriers to your goals
  • Graduating 
  • I managed to leave the house despite having anxiety
  • I started going to therapy
  • Left a toxic relationship
  • Began to assert yourself in a relationship
  • A promotion

Go out and treat yourself to these achievements! You can even compile them and post them on a post-it next to you, where you can see them.
