Island Break in the Maldives: 6 Essential Items to Pack

The idyllic islands and luxury resorts of the Maldives might be the closest things to true paradise that you can find on this planet, but the fact remains that your stay will be a lot more comfortable if you arrive well-prepared. That means packing the right things, and leaving out the wrong ones.

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives are unfamiliar territory for most of its visitors. Getting far away is undoubtedly part of the appeal, but at the same time it can make it difficult to know what to bring. There may be different expectations about what amenities will be provided.

This quick guide will cover the essentials that everyone should bring. Whether you’re staying in a luxury villa, hotel, or guesthouse, these are the items you might not have thought about that you do not want to leave at home.

1. Sunscreen and after-sun: The Maldives are near the equator, which means that their weather is much more consistent than in countries closer to the poles. It is hot and sunny all year round, which puts guests at risk of sunburn and skin damage.

Certainly, there will be places to buy sunscreen.  Some of the 5 star properties in Maldives might even provide it, but options can be limited so it is better to bring it yourself if you are very particular about the brand or ingredients of your lotion.

2. Sunglasses and protective clothing: Whether it’s an iconic pair of Ray-Bans or an inexpensive pair picked up in a sale, remember to take these to avoid having to squint wherever you go. In fact, take a pair of the latter in any case, so that you have the option of doing water sports and don’t have to worry about losing them. Opt for polarised lenses, as the glare from the sand and surface of the water can be unbearable without them.

Sun protective clothing protects you when you’re out in or on the water too. There, your sunscreen might wash off. Wear something that covers your arms and legs, as that ensures the best sun protection and can also protect against marine life such as jellyfish.

3. Insect repellent: The Maldives have a tropical climate favoured by insects and bugs, so pack some of this to protect yourself from bites and irritation.

4. Motion sickness medication: The Maldives’ territory is 99% water, so your travel options are usually boat or plane. If these bother you, be sure to pack any medication you need.

5. Electrolyte supplements: You’ll certainly be provided with water wherever you stay, but if you are very active on your trip it is easy to become dehydrated in the heat.

Pack some electrolyte powder or tablets to help you hydrate more effectively.

6. Dry bag: This also relates to the 99% water surrounding you. Make sure your electronic equipment, towels, and travel documents avoid splashes and stay dry by taking one of these wherever you go.

If you’ve got these things covered, you’re well on your way to enjoying your break. Be sure to check up-to-date travel information before you go in case something happens which requires you to pack something else.
